We focus on systems which are of low cost and do not require a monthly fee as opposed to the majority of other systems available. This makes it more affordable to the large percentage of potential patients who cannot afford the large initial cost and $30+ monthly fee. Such systems typically work through the patient's own telephone line and thus have no need of an external package. Typically, these low-cost systems make 2-3 phone calls to registered numbers and give out a custom distress signal. We note that certain extreme cases do require a base station and also permit the user to wear the pendant outside of the home. For most cases, however, those patients are with friends when they leave and are accompanied, and so have no such need and can save the large initial cost and a monthly fee which is a deterrent to most patients acquiring such systems.
